Asked about the forthcoming parliamentary elections, Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, stated that against considerable decline of the rating of acting power, the Party of Regions and the parties affiliated with the parliamentary majority, a proportional election system may lead to the formation of the majority without the Party of Regions. "Thus, if the situation with the lack of confidence to the acting authorities is not changed, the so-called anti-presidential majority might be formed without the Party of Regions," M. Tomenko declared.
The Deputy Chairman is convinced that acting authorities try to change the present election system and introduce a mixed majoritarian-proportional one. "The authorities are convinced that the mixed majoritarian-proportional system will attract big business and administrative resources in majority constituencies to compensate for the lack of trust to their party lists", he stated.
"Thus, irrespective of the results of parties in general, an ‘artificial´ parliamentary majority will be formed, and, consequently, a pro-presidential government will be set up", he added.
